[Event "Tuesday Night Marathon"]
[Site "Mechanics Institute"]
[Date "2014.7.15"]
[Round "8"]
[White "James Matz"]
[Black "Nagle"]
[Result "1-0"]
[WhiteELO "1772"]
[BlackELO "1402"]
1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 c5 {reversed KID / King's Indian Attack} 3. Bg2 Nc6 4. d3 e5
5. Nbd2 Be7 {considerd f5 here -- feel like I've seen f4 played by White in
the KID. Not sure about Be7 -- right way to continue? Sometimes moves that
feel like ordinary developing moves turn out to be bigger mistakes than I
realize.} 6. e4 d4 7. Nc4 b5 {Critical mistake! I saw b5 played in another
game in response to Nc4. As soon as I played it I realized my e-pawn was
hanging. Man! Bg4 would've been fine here. Or if the dark squared bishop had
gone to c6 (though that's a strange long term square for that piece.)} 8.
Ncxe5 Nxe5 {Maybe I should've just gone back to Nb8? b5 feels like a hard
mistake to recover from.} 9. Nxe5 Bd6 {Better way to continue? My only
counterbalance is development and queenside space. I was worried about Nc6.
Maybe Qc7 is a better try here? } 10. Nxf7 {Qc7 would've guarded against this.
Didn't see this move coming, but with e5 coming it's a good way to cash in on
my early mistake. This makes me feel like I should've been careful about f7,
and makes me like Qc7 a little more.} 10... Kxf7 {I looked other ideas here,
but I felt after Qc7, NxB, QxN, e5, it's likely I'm losing a full rook. Here I
stay down a pawn, though I have bad king safety.} 11. e5 Rb8 12. exd6 Qxd6
{White has Bf4 straightaway, but I could play Qe7+ to get out of it. So White
castles.} 13. O-O {I miss Bf4 coming here and just want to develop and cover
my king.} 13... Nf6 14. Bf4 {This makes the position hard to salvage.} 14...
Qb6 15. Bxb8 Qxb8 16. Re1 h5 {I feel like my only chance is that the a1 rook
isn't active yet, and my pieces all happen to point kingside. I feel like the
queen, playing on the b8 - h2 diagonal, probably isnt placed right, but maybe
I can play against h2?} 17. h4 {Stopping h4. } 17... Rg8 {Ends up being slow.
I looked at Ng4 and Bg4 a lot here. I know White wants to connect rooks, so
Bg4 seems like it just prompts Qd2, which is part of White's plan. If I could
have gotten f3 to get played, it would have closed off the light square
bishop. I go for a Rg8 + g4 plan.} 18. Qd2 {But this move develops and fights
for g5. } 18... Qb6 {Getting out of the way of the coming Qf4, where I need to
anticipate Bd5+ coming (with Qf4 pinning my knight, and Bd5 skewering king and
rook.)} 19. Qf4 Be6 20. Re2 c4 {I'm going for Qc5, to support g5, and maybe
try to play d3 and attack f2, but after Re5 it won't be a stable square for
the queen.} 21. Rae1 Re8 22. Rxe6 cxd3 {A last try. If RxQ, then RxR+, Bf1,
dxc with the idea of promoting and getting the Queen back.} 23. cxd3
{nullifying any possible promotion counterplay.} 23... Rxe6 24. Bd5 {And I
resign.} 1-0
