1. e4 {giving the kid the first move. he's got his work cut out for him
anyways. no need to make it uphill on my board.} c5 {i was told that he plays
a closed Sicilian by Jonathan Friday. as far as i'm concerned the closed
sicilian is no real test of blacks c5 and equality is achieved easily} 2. Nf3 {
he traveled quickly around during the first few moves so i didn't have much
time to think, my heart was all ready made up anyways... 100% of the time if
someone plays Nf3 I play d6 hoping for the open and my najdorf. but my minds
still stuck on the idea he doesn't play the open. i had decided that upon Nc3
or Bc4 (the second being a poor move which a database indicated he had played
in the past) a6?! to get a quick queenside attack rolling against his exposed
minor pieces....} a6 $2 {i play the player, not the board. my first mistake.
a6 would be great against Nc3 and Bc4... its surprising and i know it well.
i'm thinking just a move order switch here and hes playing moves like d3 next.
i neglected to see how the situation was different in the minute i had. but
the difference is huge. without a minor piece developed on the c file theres
nothing in the way of his next move} 3. c4 $1 {and my queenside attack is
effectively stopped on move 3... maybe i can play my rook to b8 and then b5
down the road... but by the time that can happen he has two other minor pieces
exerting pressure on b5..} d6 {databases seem to indicate black has a decent
game after e6... this was uncharted for me because of the oversight of the
availability of c4 on move 3. so i'm on my own. my plan with d6 is to enter
a dragon type position with a bishop on g7 exerting pressure on his weakened
h8-a1 diagonal.} 4. d4 {so now i see that because of my weak a6 move he's
going to be getting himself into a marozcy bind type position. so i conclude
that my error wasn't huge. but it did allow him to play into the bind...
which is advantageous for white i believe. looking at the board my position
looks like crap. a6 is doing nothing. nothing is developed.} cxd4 {
i have to take. letting him play d5 would be the death of me.} 5. Nxd4 {
obviously} Nf6 {attacking the pawn.... normally in the Sicilian you do this so
the knight gets developed to c3 blocking in the c-pawn... but it's all ready
on c4... damn a6. i should have stuck to my guns and not tried to be tricky
on move 2.} 6. Nc3 {
obviously. thats not the word you want to be typing about your opponents move.
} g6 {going along with the plan.} 7. f3 {a common move in the marozcy bind...
preventing my knight from going to g4 harassing the good bishop which will be
developed to e3. but i think its a little early here.... Be2 seems more
straight forward and to the point. this is sort of committal.} Bg7 8. Be3 {
following up after f3 by putting the bishop where it safely belongs.} O-O 9.
Qd2 {giving him the option of trading off the dark square bishops on h3 should
mine become powerful.} Qc7 {not the greatest move here... its the 4th or 5th
according to one engine... but my position already stinks. all because i
allowed c4. its +.90 right now.} 10. Be2 {developing and getting ready to
castle. of the two places he could bring the bishop this was best. but its a
well trodden road so this is no surprise.} Nbd7 {Heres a move where i had a
lot of options... part of me wants to put my bishop on d7... that was the
solid move, holding at +.90 but then i have no real interest in developing my
knight to c3 afterwards (which is actually another +.90 move now) because that
would allow the trade off of pieces. i figure i want to keep things
complicated with minor pieces on the board because i have the advantage of
being able to think longer.} 11. O-O {solid move. better was Nd5 but i
suspect he didn't want to get into to complicated a position so he avoided it
and played simple logical chess. any additional advantage he could have
garnered from my last move is forgone for the moment. (still +.90)} Ne5 {
my second best move. and a sharp one at that. best was e6 preventing Nd5
which sends my queen back home and places his knight on a powerful square. i
was expecting this Nd5 move again and again, and it was never played. the
engine will scream at him for the next 10 moves to play Nd5 whenever he can....
he never does. (+1.02)} 12. b3 {best was Nd5... but this moves good.
protecting the pawn but in the process making his white bishop even worse.
thus the word bind. (+.77)} b6 $2 {the engines still screaming at me to play
e6 preventing his knight from reaching that d5 outpost with tempo. i
considered it but decided that it would give him an easy to see weakness at d6
which he could focus on. i want to keep his plans hard to find. so i'm not
willing to do this. part of me is still dreaming about a queenside push which
isn't there, and part of me wants to buckle down on c5 so he cant push the
pawn and activate his terrible bishop. b6? is the tenth move down the engine
list... its not bad bad. but it gets me nowhere and could be creating a
weakness that could later be exploited because the pawns are not protecting
each other anymore. (+1.28 but only because Nd5 still exists and now i'd have
to drop my queen back to the ugly b7 square to protect that new weak pawn)} 13.
Kh1 {so he's happy with his position and doesn't want any quick action. he
takes the time to move his king to a safer square passing up further
advantages that could be grabbed with Nd5, but as i said. that will be the
case forever and he never plays it. (+.68 back to a manageable number)} Bb7 {
engine still likes e6, but i still say no easy target. this move sort of
prevents Nd5 or at least takes away the bite... it puts pressure down the long
diagonal towards his king and prevents a f4 break for the time being. its the
second most recommended move... (+.76)} 14. Bh6 {this move surprised me...
it's the 4th best move however which makes it not as bad as i asessed it over
the board. he wants to trade off his good bishop which seems sort of silly to
me. mines not doing anything yet so i don't get the point. i'm shocked its
the 4th best. i was expecting it to be a lot worse. (+.50)} Rac8 {i decided no
t to waste the tempo taking the bishop and instead would let him... i guess i
waste it anyways recapturing which i didn't take into account at the board so
then the question is which is more advantageous for me. my king on g2 or his
queen on h3. displacing his queen to h3 would have been best... i didn't
consider this at the time but afterwards his knights would be unprotected
allowing me finally to get in b5! and start some counter play. instead i bring
my rook to the dead file. its the third best move but Bxh3 was the active
move and i missed a good chance here. (+1.02)} (14... Bxh6 15. Qxh6 b5) 15.
Bxg7 {best} Kxg7 {forced (+1.02)} 16. Rac1 {its still screaming at him to play
Nd5.. the rooks actually misplaced here and would serve him better on d1. (+.
45)} h5 {e6 is the way to keep it at +.45... things like Qd7 and Ned7 are
around +.80... i see my queenside is going nowhere so i play on the other side.
.. if i play passively now i think i'm in trouble in the long run so i try to
create some advantage on the kingside. i'm thinking he might be playing
something like g4 next move but that actually isn't all that solid. now (+1.
54) which sounds bad. but there are only two moves that show that it's bad
(17. Nd5 [obviously again] and f4 [+1.12])} 17. h3 {h3? maybe he was playing
for g4... and maybe he still is?? that would be a terrible mistake now as i'd
get an either semi-open or open h-file with his king at the end of it. my
kings nicely tucked up so rooks would fly to the left. (+.43 if i have the
courage to play e6 next move, either wise about +.70)} h4 $6 {his move h3
really makes me think he was going to play for g4.. at the time i wanted to
prevent this.. so i play h4. it looks pretty good. i get a nice outpost for
my knight on g3... at least im doing something active here and trying to gain
some space. (+1.04)} (17... e6 18. g4 hxg4 19. hxg4 Rh8+) 18. f4 {Qg5 would hav
e been the way to show me h4 was king of silly... instead he played the move
which i was expecting. f4.. testing my ability to protect my new pawn on h4
which may be a weakness. (+.56)} (18. Qg5 Rh8 19. f4 Nc6 20. Nf5+) 18... Ned7 {
obviously (+.56)} 19. Bd3 $2 {bad and for a complicated reason i almost end up
showing properly. theres pressure coming to the e4 pawn now that f4 has taken
place. currently its attacked twice but protected once. better would have
been Bf3 where it wont be harassed by my knight next move tieing him up even
more. (+.06) my best position yet!} Nc5 {more pressure on e4. attacked thrice,
protected twice. and i'm about to take one of his defending pieces. this is
around the time he was cracking his knuckles every time he got to my board. i
saw this as a good sign. (+.12)} 20. Rfe1 {i get a few more knuckle cracks.
actually either protecting this way, or with the queen to e3 was equally fine.
also Nd5 is just as well, harassing my queen back for the moment and blocking
one of my lines of attack. (+.12)} Nxd3 {fifth best. and going against my
policy of keeping the pieces on the board to keep things complicated. but i
was getting worried that my kingside was getting weak and f5 might be very
powerful especially with a bishop behind it. this is his bad bishop but the
pawns are about to start moving and it might become very good very quick. so
i take it off before it can retreat... which was in retrospect probably not
that good anyways (+.47 best was Nh5 immediately which was my other candidate
move e6 was also as good... but i was committed mentally to not weakening d6...
which wouldn't have been all that weak anyways)} (20... Nh5 21. Nd5 Qd8 22. Qc3
Ng3+ 23. Kg1 e5) 21. Qxd3 {if taking was bad for any reason simple reason its
because it gave him another nobrainer move. (+.55)} Nh5 {Nh5 would have been
great a move earlier keeping me at (+.12) now i should play e6... like i
should have so many times before. because Nd5 would be strong next move.} 22.
f5 {Nd5 is the strongest move here by far. its been the strongest move at
least 10 times this game... and im confused why he hasn't played it yet... (+.
28 if handled properly)} Ng3+ {properly so far} 23. Kg1 {
obviously, Kh2 and he'll fall into traps with d5 with discovered checks to come
} g5 {not my resource for maintaining equality. Qc5 was best. pinning the
knight to the king and keeping the queen on the knight tieing him up. i never
considered it, and would not consider Qc5 for the rest of the game in my
factoring of variations. this made me miss what could have been some very
good lines. Pin to win right? I don't know why i didn't see that as a good
move... I guess Na4 always seemed just to push me back... but if Na4 when Qa5
keeping an eye on my kingside which is about to get blown up} (23... Qc5 24.
Na4 Qa5) 24. Qe3 {Qe3 is just great. this puts g5 to the test. and it fails.
(+2.22 and i'm toast, so toas)} Kf6 $4 {Holding onto my pawn at all costs. I will not
go down in material and suffer a slow defeat. I will stay even at the
detriment of my position where the pressure will grow to the size of my queen
or death. Kh3 was my first idea... but then there are nasty things happening
with my pinned pawn and maybe things like Nf6... i could actually get out of
that particular variation with Qc5 skewering his queen to king and forcing a
trade... but like i said. i never considered Qc5 to my downfall. Either way
Kh3 was best but it was (+2.22 for him) i saw a lot of things wrong with it...
so i went with a very weird move here just to see what happened. all other
options went bad quickly for me and i didn't see any super immediate danger
for me. He actually plays flawlessly for the rest of the game. showing
exactly why this weird move is so wrong. (+7.93)} 25. Nd5+ Bxd5 26. cxd5 Qb8 {
i need to maintain some control of e5 so the queen stays on the diagonal} 27.
Nc6 {clearance!! now the d4 square is vacant for his queen and he attacks my
queen with tempo.} Qc7 28. Qd4+ e5 {my only move} 29. dxe6# {
mate by en passant. very rare. you could tell he was pleased} *
