1. c4 {OK, I'm White this time. I'm using the English opening, which I've
been playing for a while, but I'm actually getting a little bored with. Still,
it served me well enough this time ...} e5 2. g3 d5 {Not a great move on his
part. It looks agressive, but I'll end up with better development after I
chase his queen around a bit.} 3. cxd5 Qxd5 4. Nf3 {So he can't capture my
king's rook with his queen.} Nc6 5. Nc3 {Now I'm developing while attacking
his queen, forcing him to waste time moving her.} Qe6 6. Bg2 Bc5 7. O-O {I'm
definitely ahead in development.} e4 {He thinks he's being agressive, but he's
overlooking} 8. Ng5 {Now he's losing more time and I've just won a pawn.} Qe7
9. Ngxe4 Bb6 10. Nd5 {Still chasing his queen.} Qd8 11. Nxb6 axb6 {Now I have
the two bishops, which is theoretically a small advantage. I'm also way ahead
in development - most of his pieces are on their home squares.} 12. b3 Nge7 13.
Bb2 {Pointing at his kingside, which pays off later.} O-O 14. d3 Be6 15. Qd2 h6
{A mistake, allowing a serious attack. I spent a long time thinking here,
before playing.} 16. Nf6+ {! Offering a knight sacrifice.} Kh8 {Smart. If he
captures, it doesn't go well. For example} (16... gxf6 {Would not be smart
after} 17. Bxf6 Kh7 18. Be4+ Bf5 19. Bxf5+ Nxf5 20. Bxd8 {And I've already
basically won.}) 17. Nh5 (17. Nd7 {Would have been better.} f6 (17... Bxd7 18.
Qxh6+ Kg8 19. Qxg7#) (17... Qxd7 18. Qxh6+ Kg8 19. Qxg7#) 18. Nxf8) 17... f6
18. Bxf6 Rxf6 (18... gxf6 19. Qxh6+ Kg8 20. Qg7#) 19. Nxf6 gxf6 20. Qxh6+ Kg8
21. Qxf6 {Now I'm three pawns up. It's also been about two hours since we
started, and I'm getting tired, so I'm separately trying not to screw up ...}
Bf7 22. Qg5+ Kf8 23. Bxc6 bxc6 24. Rfd1 Ra5 25. Qd2 Qd6 26. Qf4 {I'm starting
not to know what to do to press my advantage home. I'd love to exchange
queens and go into an easy endgame with all those pawns on th ekingside, but
he's not cooperating.} Qd7 27. Qh6+ Kg8 28. Rdc1 Qd4 29. Qd2 Kf8 30. Qc3 Qd6
31. b4 {I overlooked that he could win a pawn here, but even so, I'd still
have a positional advantage.} Nd5 {A big mistake ...} (31... Rxa2 {The pawn
loss I mentioned, but I'd still be better after} 32. Rxa2 Bxa2 33. Ra1 Be6 {
And I've got the only rook on an open file, with attacks along his back rank.})
32. Qh8+ {Boom. Now after he moves his king, he just loses his rook. He
resigns. Whew.} 1-0

{I'm Black in this game, Alex is White.} 1. e4 c6 {The Caro-Kann defense, one
of my favorites against 1.e4.} 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Bd3 {This
is a rookie move on his part, but I've never come up against it, so I didn't
take advantage of it.} Bxe4 (5... Qxd4 {Is what I should have done, winning a
pawn.}) 6. Bxe4 Nf6 7. Bf3 e6 8. Ne2 Be7 9. O-O O-O 10. Re1 Nbd7 11. Bf4 Qb6
12. Qd3 Rfd8 13. b3 e5 {At this point, I probably have full equality, which is
really the main goal when you're playing Black.} 14. Be3 exd4 15. Nxd4 Bc5 16.
Nf5 Bxe3 17. Ne7+ Kf8 18. Rxe3 Ne5 19. Qf5 Nxf3+ 20. Qxf3 Rd2 21. c4 Rad8 {My
computer analysis says dead even here, but I think I should be on my way to
some advantage. I've doubled my rooks on the open d-file, and should be able
to put some serious pressure on his position.} 22. Nf5 Qc7 23. Ng3 Qd7 24. Nf1
Qd4 25. Rae1 (25. Nxd2 {is not a good idea after} Qxa1+) 25... Rd1 {At this
point, I just start losing the thread ...} 26. Qe2 Rxe1 27. Qxe1 Qd1 {Trying
to exchange queens and head toward a drawn endgame, but I stupidly overlook}
28. Qb4+ Qd6 29. Qxb7 {Now I'm just down a pawn, and it gets worse ...} Ng4 30.
Re2 Qd7 31. Qb4+ Qd6 32. c5 Qd4 33. Qa5 Qd7 {Really stupid, at it allows} 34.
Rd2 {And now I've just lost my queen, so I resign. The next game goes much
better ...} 1-0
